Cefoxitin is a beta-lactam antibiotic of the group of the second-generation cephalosporins. Spectrum of antibacterial activity. No European breakpoints for cefoxitin

Davis Drug Guide PDF. Cefoxitin is a second-generation cephamycin antibiotic developed by Merck & Co., Inc. from Cephamycin C in the year following its discovery, 1972. It was synthesized in order to create an antibiotic with a broader spectrum. [3] Cefoxitin is a cephamycin antibiotic often grouped with the second-generation cephalosporins. It is active against a broad range of gram-negative bacteria including anaerobes.

Cefoxitin for injection is indicated for the prophylaxis of infection in patients undergoing uncontaminated gastrointestinal surgery, vaginal hysterectomy, abdominal hysterectomy, or cesarean section. Second-generation cephalosporin with activity against some gram-positive cocci, gram-negative rod infections, and anaerobic bacteria. Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins; inhibits final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, resulting in cell wall death. Pharmacokinetics Cefoxitin is rapidly excreted intact into the urine by glomerular filtration and by renal tubular secretion. Renal clearance is greater than 250 ml/min/1.73 m 2; about 75% of each dose is recovered within the first 3 h after dosing. Probenecid administered concurrently decreases the excretion rate and increases the serum half-life of cefoxitin.

Cefoxitin: Belongs to the class of second-generation cephalosporins. Used in the systemic treatment of infections., Cefoxitin. Trade Names: Mefoxin ® Drug Class: Cephalosporin 2nd generation (parenteral) Mechanism of Action: Similar to penicillin.

KEY POINTS Cefoxitin (Mefoxin) is widely mistaken for a second generation cephalosporin, but it is actually a cephamycin. Works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to one or more penicillin-binding-proteins, which interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis Has activity versus some Gram positive aerobes (including methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus), some Gram

Learn about the different generations of cephalosporins as well as their potential side effects. Cefoxitin is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections, including lung, urinary tract, abdomen, blood, skin, bone, joint, and gynecological infections. Cefoxitin belongs to a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics, which work to stop the growth of bacteria in the body. 2nd Generation Cephalosporin (cefuroxime, cefoxitin) 1.9% Patients allergic to penicillin G should avoid using cephalosporins with identical R-group side chains (cefoxitin) Patients allergic to amoxicillin should avoid cephalosporins with identical R-group side chains (cefadroxilNF and cefprozilNF) 3rd Generation … Second-generation cephalosporins and cephamycins are often used for polymicrobial infections that include gram-negative bacilli and gram-positive cocci. Because cephamycins are active against Bacteroides species, they can be used when anaerobes are suspected (eg, in intra-abdominal sepsis , decubitus ulcers , or diabetic foot infections ).
