In the proposed project, the platform of the Stockholm Public Library is extended in order to create the connection with the new building. The expansion meets the library with a light structure to preserve the importance of Asplund’s building, while the main portion is placed in the opposite side of the site.

The Stockholm Public Library, designed and built between 1918 and 1927, is Gunnar Asplund's most important work of that period. Its stark Nordic Classicist composition uses the simple geometry of a cylinder intersecting a cubic base. The Stockholm Public Library was the first library in Sweden to implement the principle of open shelves where visitors could access books without seeking assistance from library staff, a concept that the architect observed in libraries United States. The Stockholm City Library is located at a prominent intersection in the city. Its monumental presence, the centrally located rotunda (a center in a center), which surrounds its patrons with books and introduces daylight, are the elements of Asplund’s architectural strategy.
